Style Inspiration

The Style Inspiration that we’re focusing on this time is Emmanuelle Alt, Fashion Director of Paris’s Vogue Magazine, it is no doubt that she is amongst one of the most stylish people on the planet. I mean if Vogue hires you, it’s some kind of affirmation there isn’t it?

Also, the fact that her wardrobe is mainly black has already bought us over.

Let the pictures speak for themselves.

Emmanuelle Alt favors silhouettes with strong shoulders and a slim, fitted pants. I honestly wish I could carry off such a statement jacket without feeling self-conscious. *gloom*

A subtle version of a statement jacket (okay what am I even saying here?) Still working it. Thigh high boots are so last Fall but I would wear it over and over again.

One of my dream jackets from Balmain. Notice the strong shoulders thing again?

And how many leather jackets does she own?? Would love to roll around in her wardrobe. *grabby hands*

Here’s my interpretation of her style:

  • Leather jacket from Rick Owens (Leather jacket=staple. I can’t find that version with the strong shoulders!!)
  • Alexander McQueen Bag
  • Acne Wedges (Because fierce shoes are hardly ever flat.)
  • Icon watch from MoMa design store (I own this watch, and I say it’s awesome)
  • Tank from Helmut Lang
  • Natalia Brilli Tyler Black Lamb Tyler bracelet
  • Missoni Skinny jeans
  • Shredded Tee from I don’t like Mondays

Who’s your Style Inspiration? How does he/she influence the clothes you wear?

If there is one thing you should know about japanese street trends, it’s that when it hits, you wouldn’t be able to miss it unless you are blind. You can walk down a street and literally spot a dozen girls sporting the same trends. I admit that I am smitten by a few of these trends myself, and will be high lighting some of the most prominent trends this spring/summer season!

The little cotton dress: Light-coloured cotton dresses ranging from mid thigh to maxi length. Maxi dresses are especially popular.

Who do you look to for inspiration? Do you look to style icons like Alexa Chung and Kate Lanphear, or would you much rather look at what others are wearing on the streets? I admit that I belong to the latter category – street styles are just so diverse and much suited for daily wear. Sure, Alexa Chung might look perfect most of the time but how many of us can afford top to toe designer togs? (If you can, I wouldn’t even bother with surfing for inspiration – just hire her stylist.) The styles you see on the streets are so much more real and practical, not to mention attainable. I have not had the chance to dress up for a long time due to work, so surfing online for street snaps soon became a nightly fixture for me. Here are some of my favourites off the streets of Tokyo, from DropSnap and Style-Arena.jp

I seriously love this coordinate. It’s such a gorgeous silhouette – and the hair! The hair!

I love her shoes so much. And looking at her really makes me contemplate hacking off a good 10 inches off my hair.

This look is so simple and chic. I definitely see myself wearing something like that soon. Time to dig out the embarrassing metal t-shirts I’ve amassed during my angsty teenage years!

Where do you get your inspiration from, or are you a fashion ninja and can pull a perfect coordinate from your closet blind?

I think it is pretty obvious that I am obsessed with hair, judging from how much time I spend on it. A good hairstyle and a well made-up face dresses up a plain outfit more than any single accessory can ever hope to do. It’s a personal pet peeve of mine to see someone with an immaculate outfit with lank and greasy hair – why bother putting in so much effort to dress nicely, only to neglect your personal appearance? To me that’s akin to wearing a chanel suit set with slippers.

That said, here are some of the hairstyles I am eager to try out this summer.

Loose waves ala Chloe Fall 2010. Perfect with a loose summery dress, and it wouldn’t look the least bit out of place in the Fall as well.

Marcel waves inspired by Dior. I have always wanted to try 1920′s inspired finger waves, but they are so hard to style! I think nothing channels elegance and timelessness like this hairstyle does. I wish I could turn back time and go to prom with perfect marcel waves.

I am sure I am not the only person that has to deal with frizzy hair during summer time. Take a cue from Proenza Schouler and make it work to your advantage!

A tousled updo like Chanel’s is elegant and casual at the same time. I prefer to do my hair up in summer – it helps me cool down so much, and you don’t have worry about hair plastering to your neck in this humid weather. Gross.

Updos are perfect for drawing attention to hair accessories too!

Alexander Wang’s braids could never get old. I truly intend on trying this out soon – it’s been long enough!

I would rather kill myself and my cat before watching The Hills, but I can’t ignore Lauren Conrad and her immaculate hair. Sure, it most likely takes a team of stylists and the best extensions money can buy to have hair like hers, but I can dream, right?

Not even gonna lie- I would do anything to have hair like hers. It’s pretty much perfect.

Who are your hairspirations? Do you think it’s okay to blog about hair and makeup, or should we just stick to clothes?

At this point, right about everyone and their mom has written about Taylor Momsen. I like Taylor Momsen, despite what everyone says about her eyeliners and garters and I like GossipGirl. THERE I’VE SAID IT~!!! Don’t judge me!

Some say her style may be repetitive and boring…even predictable after awhile but hey~!! We wear what suits us most right?

I’m jealous of that long blonde hair and copious amount of eyeliner she can pull off. I’d just look like some wailing bride who’s been left standing at the altar.

And it’s pretty obvious she enjoys wearing black but that’s not why we like her so much. *shifty eyes* (okay maybe that’s ONE of the factors.)

I love that she pays attention to her accessories too.

So here we try and replicate her look:

  • Dress: Supreme Cotton Tiered Sleeveless Dress by Acne
  • Shrug: Maison Martin Margiela Spider Web Shrug
  • Stockings: House of Holland
  • Shoes: Alexander Wang ‘Freja’ Lace-Up Boot
  • Bag: Proenza Schouler PS1-C-1 Medium, Lux Leather
  • Rings: Alexander McQueen, nOir, kabiri
  • Bracelet: Leather Thorn from Ann Demeulemeester

What do you think of Taylor Momsen’s look? Hate it or love it?
