I don’t know about you, but I love it when fashion completely turns everyone’s expectations over and, in the words of Tim Gunn, “make it work”.

I am sure that every girl have been warned at any given point in their lives to never wear open-toed sandals with stockings. It was an image permeated by unfortunate matrons and clueless office ladies, and there are hardly any greater faux pas than that. On the runways of A/W09 and S/S10 however, we see many designers challenging this view by pairing strappy sandals with thick ankle length socks, in turn giving these summery shoes a distinctive touch of winter.

Galliano added a pop of colour with bright pink socks, while Burberry opted to keep the colours within the same family.

I also love how Versace paired slouchy socks and stompy shoes with a feminine dress in their pre-fall 2010 collection

Miu Miu however, literally knocked the socks off me (you know I can’t resist the puns) with their embellished socks. We are like magpies and love shiny objects as can be seen from our embellished lace tights DIY

I am so going to find a pair of plain socks and sew all manners of shiny nonsense on them.

Tom Binns necklace
I was inspired by this picture while browsing a local fashion magazine. Tom Binns’ jewellery is so sought after, even Anna Wintour wants her hands on one. We’re no different but alas, I only have money for some chains, diamante necklace and bunch of safety pins which is just what we need for this tutorial~!!!

We have some chains here (approximately 3 metres of it), alot of safety pins and a beautiful diamante necklace we found. It is a good idea to find one that is dramatic or else there really is no point making this. We’re making a statement necklace, not something you wear when you run across the prairie fields.

First, we wanna connect one end of the chain to the necklace itself so we made use of the jump ring that holds the clasp to the necklace.

Then we start winding the chain in between the loops until it covers the entire necklace. The reason for the chain is to fill up the empty spaces in between the necklace so it looks less sparse, tone down the bling and also provides loops for the safety pins to go on later.

So this is how it’s gonna look like with all the chains on, the necklace is less glaring and costume-y. As you can see one safety pin is on, that is how I’ve finished off the other end of the chain.

Start piling on the safety pins~!!!! Make it interesting and random, this is the fun part. Even Dawn who’s usually the assigned photographer for the DIY posts wants in on this.

And here is the finished product. We overbought safety pins as you can see but heyyyy we can use them for some other things!! :D We hope you’ve enjoyed this DIY fashion tutorial~!! Do look out for the next one!

We made matching earrings too~!!

Both of us at Monoxious were invited by Nuffnang to partake in a little tea party courtesy of SK-II yesterday. I must admit that Arissa and I are not prudent to say the least when it comes to skincare, and the experience has certainly opened up our eyes a little.

It was a pleasure chatting to Ju of The Little Teochew and Esther of Esther the Gorgeous over the pretty and delicious snacks.

I was overwhelmed by the plethora of products present before us, but luckily the helpful sales assistants were quick to enlighten me on their various uses.

A complimentary but unanimously dreaded skin analysis revealed that I am a sparkly vampire, just like those Twilight. Cool in the sense that I will stop aging, but otherwise an insult. Just kidding. No, really.

Once again, thank you Nuffnang and SK-II for extending this invitation to us.

To find out more about their products, please feel free to check out their website through the advertisement posted on the top right corner of our blog.

I have to admit, Alexander Wang’s Prefall 2010 collection isn’t one that makes me run around screaming in ecstasy, declaring my undying love for him.

I’m not saying that I didn’t like it, instead I take a look at my existing wardrobe and think of all the wonderful looks I could create to mimic this collection. In a way, this collection is ingenious taking in a lot of the existing trends and reworking it, a change in the fabric at the waist sees the boyfriend blazer being given a new lease of life.  I see the Goddess dresses’ hemline increased , giving it a more classy look without compensating sexiness. I see so much opportunities for mixing and matching.

For example, the above look can be easily replicated with a mesh dress from American Apparel and paired with a neat shift dress you have in your wardrobe right now.

This collection if you ask me, is displaying his former experience in styling, since he has already fully displayed his talents as a fashion designer. Revisiting the current street style trends, he managed to conjure up an even more interesting mix just as we were beginning to decide if we should ditch those boyfriend blazers and goddess dresses. It definitely makes me take a second look at my existing wardrobe before deciding if my clothes are too dated or out of fashion.

One thing for sure, I’m keeping my boyfriend blazer.

My post titles all sound so cliche and morbid. I’m seriously out of ideas. I wonder if it’ll come to a day where we just have dates as our titles. That would be kinda sad I think.

I failed to mention that there is a sweet replica of the cage dress from Alexander Wang’s S/S 2008 collection that I scored in m)phosis. It’s not a dress though, more like just a long top cause there’s no way that thing can cover my girly bits on its own.

I was out shopping with Dawn and these Acne Atacomas were srsly killing my feet slowly. I was so tempted to get this pair of sneaker boots from Topshop cause they’re sooooooo comfy.

But sneaker boots. Meh.

Arissa_monoxious_caged_soul_ripped_hearts_02

So we continued shopping, painful arch/dropping toes and all. No new shoes but some awesome pigments from the Xmas collection from MAC and an awesome leather jacket from Pull & Bear, albeit expensive but I guess most leather jackets are anyway. I look forward to the day I can wear it.

Perhaps… when I’m in Tokyo. Hurhurhur….

Black Outfit Breakdown:

  • Cage top: m)phosis
  • White tank: H&M
  • Shorts: I don’t remember where I got it from. : (
  • Boyfriend blazer: m)phosis
  • Shoes: Acne
